Flea treatment, how to control fleas and the flea lifecycle

Adult fleas live on and around the animal and lay eggs that hatch out after a few days to small larvae. These live in bedding and on the floor, feeding on skin scales and dust for up to 4 weeks. Then each larva becomes a pupa; a resting stage for the larva to change into a flea. The new flea emerges from this normally within a month, but it can stay in it for up to a year, emerging only when stimulated by vibrations from people or animals walking around. This is how you get fleas again after an flea infestation’s been treated, or in properties that have been empty. You must kill the fleas already living on and around the animals, get rid of the larvae and eggs in areas that the animals have been in and stop the lifecycle starting again from new fleas that will emerge from the pupae. In low level infestations just treating the animals for fleas could stop the flea problem. Washing pet bedding at over 60°C and hoovering up dust and debris will help remove the flea life stages too. Quite often though the fleas will have been present for some time and so the infestation is well established and widespread. This is when you need a professional flea pest control service.
