How legislation affects bird control and bird proofing
All birds and their nests, eggs and young are protected by The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. However, some birds are classed legally as Pest Birds because they use our buildings for shelter, scavenge for food, eat crops and cause danger at airports, gather in groups to nest and feed, are noisy and aggressive, carry disease and insect infestations, produce filth and debris that damage buildings and are a risk to public health and safety. It is legal to carry out pest bird control in Essex; some examples of pest birds are Carrion Crow, Hooded Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie, Rook, Feral Pigeon, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Great and Lesser Black-backed Gulls. The law is very specific though on when and how pest birds can be controlled. The law changes yearly so what was legal one year could be illegal the next; the laws vary across the UK too. Always get professional pest control advice when it comes to bird control and bird proofing, otherwise you could end up in court for committing Wildlife Crime.
Health risks associated with birds
Diseases that cause illness and death in man are carried by pest pigeons especially. Respiratory diseases like Psittacosis and Avian ‘flu. Severe food poisoning and body infections from Salmonella and E. coli. Bird Fleas, Bird Mites and Martin Bugs are blood sucking insects that live on birds and in the nests; they move into buildings and feed on human blood. Beetles, Flies and Moths breed in pigeon mess and nests and then infest buildings and contaminate food. Blowflies breed in dead birds and the flies infest buildings, looking for food to lay eggs in.
